The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney TD, today welcomed the signing of an agreement reached between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, which should resolve the long running name dispute between their respective countries. The proposed new name, Republic of North Macedonia, will now have to be ratified in each country.
The Tánaiste said: “I want to commend Prime Minister Tsipras and Prime Minister Zaev for the considerable political courage they have shown in reaching this historic agreement. This agreement strengthens Macedonian EU accession prospects and reaffirms the clear European perspective for the entire Western Balkans region.
“It is my hope that the agreement is quickly ratified in both countries and that the courage shown in reaching this agreement is reflected in a decision to open accession negotiations when the Council meets at the end of June.”
